- Merge shapes Select the shapes to merge. To select several objects, press Shift, and then select each object. On the Drawing Tools Format tab, select Merge Shapes, and then pick the option you want.
- To insert a shape, go to Insert Shapes. Select the shape that you want, and then use the crosshairs to draw it onto the slide. Next, if you’re on a Mac, click on the Shape Format tab at the top Merge Shapes dropdown menu. For Windows, go to the Format tab Merge Shapes dropdown menu. As you can see, there are several options for merging.
This is the second of the four Combine Shape commands in PowerPoint 2011. You have already learned how Combine, the first of these commands works on selected shapes. Now, in this tutorial you will learn how to use Union, the second command of this quartet — you will take two or more shapes and unite them.

Most of the time, SmartArt graphics work great with their defaultlooks -- and that's something to credit Microsoft with. In additionyou can changeone SmartArt graphics to another and you can also changecolors or applya new SmartArt Style to make your SmartArt appear distinct andunique. What many users don't realize though is that they can changethe individual shapes within a SmartArt graphic to another shape --for instance, you can change some circles in your SmartArt graphicto squares with a mere click or two! Follow these steps to explorehow you can change the individual shapes in SmartArt graphics:
- Select your existing SmartArt graphic. Then select the particularshape which you want to change within your SmartArt graphic. In Figure1 you can see that among the three Rounded Rectangle shapes,the middle one has been selected.

- Select the SmartArt tab of the Ribbon thatyou can see highlighted in red in Figure 2. Withinthis tab, locate the Edit SmartArt group and clickthe Shape button (highlighted in blue in Figure2).

In Figure4 you can see that the Rounded Rectangle shapeselected earlier is now changed to an Oval. Notethat only the shape is changed, and all other attributes of the shapesuch as fill color, outline color, etc, are still the same (compare Figure1 and 4).
